Michael J. Zwickl

NOTRE DAME - Michael J. Zwickl, 96, passed away on Thursday, April 19, in Dujarie House, Holy Cross, Notre Dame, IN. Michael was born on July 18, 1915, in South Bend, to Michael G. and Kathrine (Zwickl) Zwickl. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Josephine Zwickl, and Sister Mary Janice Zwickl, CSC; and brother, Alfred Zwickl. On April 17, 1939, he married the former Henrietta "Pat" Beehler, who preceded him death on May 23, 1994. Surviving are his daughter, Janice (Joseph) Ely of Texas; sons, Rolland (Theresa) Zwickl of California and Phillip (Barbara) Zwickl of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren, Phillip J. (Michele) Zwickl Jr., Kevin M. (Mary) Zwickl, Beth Ann Zwickl, David M. Zwickl, Kenneth S. Zwickl, Tina M. (James) Hubert, Lisa (Bryan) Krute, Todd Ely and Theresa (Douglas) Broomes; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; a brother, George (Patricia) Zwickl of Indianapolis; and his sister-in-law, Betty J. Zwickl of South Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was employed with the South Bend Post Office and was a Clerk-Carrier in 1938, until he joined the Navy in 1945. He then returned to the Post Office in 1946 and was promoted into management, advancing to Assistant Postmaster in South Bend when he retired in 1973. After retirement, Mike and Pat moved to Dewart Lake near Milford, Indiana, for the summers and wintered in Brooksville, FL. Mike moved back home, residing at Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. Visitation will be on Monday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m. on Monday following the visitation at St. Bavo Catholic Church, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the St. Bavo Food Bank, 511 W. 7th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
