ELKHART - Joseph L. Vargyas Sr., 84, passed away at 1:24 am Thursday, January 1, 2015, in his residence surrounded by his family. Joe was born on July 10, 1930, in South Bend, to Joseph and Anne (Tatay) Vargyas. He served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean War and survived the Chosin Reservoir. Joe retired from the South Bend Fire Department in 1986 after 34 years of service. He also was a member of the DAV of Elkhart, the Marine Corps League, the Calvert Rod and Gun Club and played for the Green Bay Packers. On June 28, 1952, in Akron, Ohio, he married the former Anne Marie Sernicola, who survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Steven) Vargyas-Jellison of Elkhart; two sons, Joseph L. (Scott T. Perkins) Vargyas Jr. of Spring, TX, and Gary (MaryBeth) Vargyas of St. Charles, IL; seven grandchildren: S. Zachary Jellison, Stephanie Jellison Hendricks, Kari Jellison Hazelbaker, Sarah Elizabeth Vargyas, Anthony Joseph Vargyas, Alexander James Vargyas and John Karl Vargyas; 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley (Raymond) Sommer of South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Thursday, January 8, 2015, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial with military services will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 Wednesday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm.
