Jeanne Ward Derda
April 7, 1929 - Dec. 23, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Jeanne, of Pompano Beach, Florida, and formerly of South Bend, Indiana, and daughter of Dr. James and Mary Ward, passed away Sunday, December 23rd, in the presence of her husband, Arthur J. Derda, her daughter, Julie Mathews Lupella, and sons-in-law, Rob Lupella and Greg Derda. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jeanne moved to Mishawaka, Indiana, with her parents and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1946. She attended and graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a Bachelor degree in English. Jeanne was married to Joseph L. Mathews of South Bend, Indiana, and had two children, Edward (Ed), her son, preceded her in death. Her daughter Julie lives in North Carolina with her husband, Rob. Very active in the community, Jeanne performed a variety of volunteer roles with The Junior League of South Bend and was a substitute teacher with the South Bend School System. She had a passion for The Arts, reading, cooking, traveling (Great Britain, Chicago and New York City in particular), puzzles/games, and sports as well as a very quick and witty sense of humor. Jeanne and Art first met and dated while in high school but each went their separate way after graduation. Forty-three years later they met again in South Bend and renewed their friendship. In 1995, Art and Jeanne married & moved to Florida. No service will be performed. We encourage you to make a donation to your local Hospice organization. Thank you to our friends and family for all of the kind words, wishes, and support.
