SOUTH BEND - "Mike" Yuhas, 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Holy Cross Village in South Bend. He was born August 21, 1930, in Calumet City, IL, to Mary & Michael J. Yuhas II, where he grew up working in the family bakery. Mike attended the University of Notre Dame where he was introduced to his future Saint Mary's College bride, Catherine, by his twin sister Shirley at "Mardi Gras Night." After graduation from Notre Dame in 1953, Mike served two years in the United States Army. During this period, Mike and Catherine were married on May 10, 1954, and lived together in Verdun, France. After returning stateside, Mike took a job at US Steel, and he & Catherine started a family in Merrillville, IN. Together they had seven children. Mike later moved the family to South Bend, where he worked at Notre Dame and eventually retired from Stanz Food Service in 1996. After retirement, Mike enjoyed walking & socializing at the Notre Dame Loftus Center, as well as spending time with his children and eight grandchildren. He was a longtime parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church. Mike is survived by his wife, Catherine, his twin sister, Shirley Fitzgerald of Massachusetts, and younger brother, Tom Yuhas of California. Also surviving are his children, Michael J. Yuhas IV (Sandy) of Arizona, Mary King (Michael) of California, Carol Yuhas of Ohio, Tom Yuhas (Franny) of Maryland, Jim Yuhas of Michigan, Paul Yuhas of California and David Yuhas (Juliann) of Granger. Surviving grandchildren include Elise Mejias (David), Rebecca Yuhas, Sarah Yuhas and Michael J. Yuhas V, all of Arizona, Michael & Andrew King of California, and Grace & David Yuhas of Granger. The Yuhas family would like to thank the staff at Holy Cross Village Dujarie House for their care and support. Friends may visit with family from 3-6 pm Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am Friday, November 9, 2012, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 Indiana 933, South Bend, and private interment will be held for family at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church. Online condolences may be left for the Yuhas family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
