GRANGER - David R. Prentkowski, 55, residing in Granger, Indiana, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012, at his home following a drowning accident that also took the life of his granddaughter, Charlotte Chelminiak. David was born on January 14, 1957, in South Bend, Indiana, to Leonard S. and Margaret R. (Tarr) Prentkowski. On August 19, 1977, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, he married Wanda J. (Beckham) Prentkowski, who survives. Along with his loving wife of 35 years, he is also survived by his three daughters, Mara (Matt) Kaiser of Aurora, CO, Erica Prentkowski and Andra Prentkowski, both of South Bend; and one son, Nicholas Prentkowski of Granger; granddaughter, Harlan, and the late granddaughter, Charlotte Chelminiak; his parents, Leonard and Margaret Prentkowski of South Bend; and three sisters, Cindy (Ronald) Glon of South Bend, Sue (Jim) Alt of Denver, CO, and Ann (Larry) Ketola of Amasa, MI. David served as director of Food Services at the University of Notre Dame since 1990. A 1979 graduate of Purdue University, he majored in hotel and restaurant management while working in the cafeterias of the university's residence halls. Following his graduation, he worked for a time as a manager at Stouffer's Hotel in St. Louis before returning to Purdue to earn a master's degree. Before going to Notre Dame, Prentkowski served as director of food services at the University of Utah and the University of Michigan. Throughout his career, he was a prominent and active member of the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS), serving as its president from 1996-1997. Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of David's and his granddaughter Charlotte's lives will be at 9:30 AM Tuesday, August 14, 2012, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame. Interment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 - 8:00 PM today in Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
