SOUTH BEND -- Matthew John Rutkowski, 86, of South Bend, died at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday (March 26, 2003) at Hospice House of St. Joseph County. He was born in South Bend on March 24, 1917. He married Jean Clapp in Fort Thomas, Ky., on Feb. 18, 1943, and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, David (Roberta) of Gilbert, Ariz., Philip of Elkhart and Mark (Pam) of Indianapolis; one daughter, Lynn (Bob) Rutkowski of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond of South Bend; and one sister, Mrs. Cas (Gertrude) Wisniewski of South Bend. One brother, Harry, is deceased. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. The service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Bavo's Catholic Church in Mishawaka. Mr. Rutkowski served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He retired from Wheelabrator-Frye Corp. and was a member of St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 360, American Legion Post 161, the St. Joseph Young Men's Club and the Polish National Alliance. Memorials may be given to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
