SOUTH BEND - SOUTH BEND - Mary Koczan, age 98, passed away at 9:23am Tuesday, August 15, 2017.
Mary was born on July 8, 1919 in Lynch, Kentucky to John and Rose (Molnar) Tamandli and they moved to South Bend when she was 3 years old. On February 13, 1943 in South Bend she married Alfred Koczan. They were married 51 years until he died on November 7, 1994. Mary was also preceded in death by her sister Elizabeth Mattox and her brothers John, Steve, Frank, Joseph and Julius Tamandli. Surviving are two daughters Char Koczan and Jacqueline Butler both of South Bend, a son Michael and his wife (her favorite daughter-in-law) Gail Koczan of Lakeville, 6 grandchildren Jeff (Brenda) Karason, Edward (Melissa) Koczan, Michael (Jaime) Koczan, Kellie (Zac) Moore, Casey (Ryan) James, and Marie (Keith) Thielmann and 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Mary was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, and through the years she helped with many fish fries and always enjoyed the time she spent with the ladies down in the church basement making keflies, kolatch and cookies for their annual Christmas cookie walk. She spent many hours playing Scrabble with her boating, camping, church, and Fairington friends and with her family after their holiday dinners. Mary also enjoyed doing her daily Tribune crossword puzzle. She will always be remembered for her compassionate and loving heart and the joy and happiness she brought to everyone around her. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, August 19, 2017 in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. Private burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from noon until the time of the service Saturday in the funeral home.
