NORMAN H. JOHNSTON Age 87, a Community Man, Businessman, Entrepreneur and a Family Man, formerly of Valparaiso, IN (1940-1995) passed away Monday, December 22, 2003, at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer, IN. Born at Lorain, Ohio on October 24, 1916, the son of the late William and (Minnie Mauer) Herbert. A 1934 graduate of Horace Mann High School, Gary, IN, past member of First Christian Church, Valparaiso, past member First Christian Church, Rensselaer, past president Rotary Club, Valparaiso, member Rotary Club, Rensselaer, past president Jaycees, Valparaiso, former vice president Jaycees, State of Indiana, former Board of Directors Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce. He was employed for 11 years at U.S. Steel, Gary Works as a Metalurgist. Norm was active in the Porter County Republican Party for twenty-five years. Norman and his brother, William owned and operated the Johnston Sports Shop in Valparaiso; owned and operated (1962) the Pines Ski Lodge, Valparaiso. Norm also invented the ski that won the World Cup in 1976 in Innsbruck, Austria; co-inventor of the GLM method of skiing with Cliff Taylor. Norm was well noted for his charisma, personality and contagious smile. He will be truly missed by his family and community. Survivors: wife, Emma Mae Wagner-Johnston of Rensselaer, IN; daughter, Jeanie Butterfield-Johnston - First Grade Teacher at Twin Branch School, Mishawauka; 2 grandchildren, Brian Johnston Butterfield and Adam Johnston; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife, Mildred Johnston, and son, Attorney, Porter County Judge, Terry Johnston, two brothers, William and Albert Johnston, three sisters, Mildred Dawson, Linda Robinson and Marguerite Sherman. Funeral services Saturday, December 27, 2003, 10 a.m., First Christian Church, 1507 Glendale Blvd., Valparaiso, IN, Pastor Keith Kincaid, officiating. Cremation to follow at Calvary Crematory, Portage, IN. Friends may call Friday, December 26, 2003, 3-8 p.m. at Dykes Funeral Home, 2305 North Campbell St., Valparaiso, IN.
