Sylvester J. Jaworski
July 29, 1932 - August 21, 2022
Sylvester “Sal” J. Jaworski, 90, passed away at 11:35 p.m. on August 21, 2022. Sal was born on July 29, 1932 to the late Casimir and Josephine (Slaby) Jaworski Sr. in South Bend. He was a 1950 graduate of Greene Township High School where he enjoyed various activities such as basketball and dances. On October 1, 1955, he married the love of his life, Gertie (Sobczak) Jaworski at St. Hedwig Catholic Church where they were devout members and firm in their faith their entire lives. This marriage and partnership lasted 64 years; one would rarely see Gertie without Sal. Sal was an active member of Golden Cluster as well as the Holy Name Society at St. Hedwig. Sal also served as an usher at the church for more than 69 years, rarely missing a Mass. He also served the church as a money counter and helped with seasonal decorations that enhanced the various seasons of worship. Sal served his country as a Marine from 1950-1953 during the Korean War. He often recounted stories of his adventures during this tour of duty and always referred to his love of country. He was an active member of American Legion Post 357 since 1954. Sal often supported the Post by placing flags on veterans graves for Memorial Day. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing and was a member of the Crumstown Conservation Club for many years. Sal spent many hours tending his vegetable garden and flower beds. Visitors to his home often left with bags of produce or bunches of flowers. Sal, along with Gertie, were caterers at St. Hedwig Memorial Hall, as well as many other local locations in the area for over 30 years. Their love and attention to cooking details were very apparent in all the Polish food they provided for many weddings, retirees’ groups and other banquet celebrations. They also enjoyed baking all types of delicious traditional treats for friends and family during the holidays. Gertie and Sal were fiercely proud of their family and their home was often full of love, laughter and wonderful food! Sal is survived by his sons, Michael (Lisa) Jaworski of South Bend, Tim (Kathy) Jaworski of North Liberty and his grandsons, Daniel (Sara) Jaworski and David (Nicole) Jaworski, both of Lakeville. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Kimberlynn and Oliver, his most recent blessing. Additional survivors include his sisters, Veronica Weinkauf and Helen Przybylinski as well as many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his wife Gertie, Sal was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers, Stanley, John, Walter, Leo, Casimir and Alex. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2022 from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, with a Rosary being offered at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 26, 2002 at noon at St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly suggests memorial contributions in Sal’s honor be offered to St. Hedwig Church or Center for Hospice. Online condolences and memories may be left for the family at www.kaniewski.com. The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Goshen Cancer Center, Memorial Hospital 3 South, Kay and Ramon at Home by the Dome and Sharon Hochstetler for all the care, love and support for Sal.
