Resident Here 50 Years Dies
Martin Niedbalski, 829 North Elmer street, one of the early local Polish residents, died at 11 o'clock Tuesday night in the home following a week's illness. In November, 1934, Mr. Niedgalski with his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He was totally bling for the last eight years as a result of spending 21 years before an open fire in a foundry. Mr. Niedbalski was born in Szaradowo, Poland, and came to South Bend from that country more than a half century ago. He married Miss Mary Szybowicz, a daughter of the first local Polish settlers, the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Szybowicz, Nov. 17, 1884, in St. Hedwige's Roman Catholic church, with the late Rev. Valentine Czyzewski,C.S.C., founder of the local Polish parishes, officiating. Upon coming to South Bend, Mr. Niedbalski opened a grocery at Walnut and Napier streets and was one of the first Polish merchants here. He conducted the business for 15 years. For some time he worked in the Studebaker corporation factory and the last 21 years before he retired he was employed by the Oliver Farm Equipment company. His brother, Vincent Niedbalski, who died 27 years ago was the first Polish druggist in this city. Besides the widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Paczesna and Mrs. Valentine Kujawa; three sons, Frank, Sylvester and Eugene Niedbalski; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all in South Bend.The Funeral will be held at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning from St. Stanislaus' B.M. Roman Catholic church with Rev. Boleslaus J. Sztuczko, C.S.C., pastor, chanting the requiem high mass. Interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.
