MISHAWAKA - Marie J. Housand, 101, passed away quietly in her sleep at her home in Mishawaka on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012. Marie was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Mishawaka to August and Josephine (Sammet) Doll. On Jan. 11, 1936, she married Jonathan W. Housand Sr., and they celebrated 62 years together until his passing in 1998. Marie is survived by her seven children, Barbara (Stephen) Theobald of Innsbrook, Mo., Janet (David) Eggleston, Cheryl (Kent) Hickle and Michael (Helen) Housand, all of Mishawaka, Mary Jo (Frank) Tomasik of Osceola, Kathleen (Mike) Marien of Granger and Jonathan Jr. (Sherry) Housand of Elkhart; and one sister, Eleanor Norris of Mishawaka. She was the proud grandmother of 29 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Marie was also preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Tomasik, as well as four brothers and four sisters. Marie was a life-long member of St. Joseph Parish in Mishawaka. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to the loving care of her family. She was known as a woman of quiet grace who never in her life uttered a harsh or critical word to or about anyone. Marie was an excellent cook and all of her family continues to prepare recipes "just like Mom used to make," but never quite as good as Mom's. She enjoyed reading and knitting. In her later years, Marie spent many hours knitting hats for newborn babies in local hospitals and for Riley Hospital for Children. She cut thousands of Campbell Soup labels for St. Joseph School. Friends may spend time with Marie's family on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. Third Street, Mishawaka, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill St., Mishawaka, with the Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Joseph Parish. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
