Police Bullet Kills James Ward
SOUTH BEND, Ind., 10/13/1967 (UPI)-
A policeman investigating a break-in shot to death former South Bend Central High School basketball star James Ward, 22, early Thursday. Ward, who authorities said only recently applied for a job with the city police department, was felled by two shots outside the Mohawk Door Co. on the city's west side. Patrolman William Stoynoff said Ward ran from the back door after Stoynoff and Patrolman Matthew Puecker noticed a broken window in the building. Stoynoff said he ordered Ward to halt, fired four shots over his head with an M-1 carbine, then shot directly at him twice when the youth continued running. Dr. Harry Ludwick, St. Joseph County coroner, said Ward died at scene off a heart wound. Puecker fired at a man he said was not Ward, and who escaped. Police said at least one other youth may be involved in the break-in. Ward and Mike Warren formed one of the finest Indiana high school basketball guard combinations in the early 1960's. In his junior year in 1963, Ward was a key member of the Central quintet which went to the state tourney finals where it bowed to Muncie Central in the title game. Warren became a star on UCLA's reigning NCAA basketball championship team.
