SOUTH BEND - Bernard J. Stopczynski, Sr., passed away at 8:30 am on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 in Sanctuary of Holy Cross, South Bend, IN. Bernard was born on December 16, 1916 in Crumstown, IN to the late Ignatius and Josephine (Witkowski) Stopczynski. On June 14, 1941 he married Theodosia (Szulczyk), she preceded him in death on March 29, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Bukowski; and by two brothers, Edward and Alex Stopczynski; and by a sister, Eleanor Stopczynski. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Richard) Van Overberghe of South Bend; son, Bernard (Kathleen) Stopczynski, Jr. of Granger; nine grandchildren, Daniel (Karen) Van Overberghe of New Carlisle, Angela (Bob) Budzinski of South Bend, Lynda (Bill) Luke of Grand Rapids, MI, Erin (Trish) Stopczynski of South Bend, Justin (Kelli) Stopczynski of South Bend, Peter (Karen) Bukowski of Roseville, CA, Maria (Randy) Jorgensen of Mill Creek, WA, Paul Bukowski of Los Angeles, CA and Margaret (Tod) Johnson of Snohomish, WA; thirteen great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Carley, Trevor, Connor Van Overberghe of New Carlisle, Victoria Budzinski of South Bend, Amber and Jason Luke of Grand Rapids, MI, Kennedy and Grace Jorgensen of Mill Creek, WA, Madelyn Bukowski of Roseville, CA, Maci and Laini Johnson of Snohomish, WA, and Jackson Stopczynski of South Bend; he is also survived by his two sisters, Virginia Dworecki of South Bend and Theresa Walczewski of Granger. Bernard worked for Paramount Furniture Factory in Mishawaka, where he learned the craft of furniture upholstering. After the factory moved to Sturgis, MI, he was employed by Bendix Corp, where he retired in 1978 after 30 years of service in Dept. 141. He continued the craft of reupholstering furniture part-time while working at Bendix and after retirement. Bernard enjoyed fishing as well. He was a parishioner of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, where he belonged to the Holy Name Society and Harvest House. He was also a member of St. Joseph's Young Men's Club and Bendix Local UAW Retirees. Visitation will be from 3 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, May 8, 2011 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower, Rd, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, May 9, 2011 in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Adalbert Catholic Church, 2505 Grace St, South Bend, IN 46619.
