The man found dead in an alley on South Bend The man found dead in an alley on South Bend's west side Friday afternoon has been identified by his wife as 50-year-old George Reed. Police were called to the alley between the 300 blocks of Wellington and Illinois Streets just after 3 p.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found Reed dead from at least one gunshot wound. Reed's wife, Pamela, says she last saw her husband around 2 p.m. when he left to go to the store. "I was screaming," she said. "I didn't believe it. I still don't." Family and friends say Reed was a recovering alcoholic who recently turned his life around. He spent time working at a nearby bakery and was known around the neighborhood for his helping hands. "He didn't bother nobody," said friend Larry Palmer, who knew Reed for more than 30 years. "I don't know how somebody could do something to a person with a heart like this. It really hurts to see a friend gunned down like that for no reason." Metro Homicide spent hours at the scene collecting evidence Friday night. They're continuing to investigate and haven't made any arrests.
