Frederick James Ganser

Mishawaka-Frederick "Fred" James Ganser, 89, passed away early, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in Golden Living Center, Mishawaka. Fred was born on November 1, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MI to Tony and Mary Ganser. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerome Ganser. On June 24, 1946 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka he married the former Lois Blake. Surviving are his loving wife of 67 years, Lois; children, Greg (Kaye) Ganser of Mishawaka, Chris (Paul) Lauder of Dallas, TX, Mark (Joyce) Ganser of Columbus, OH and Warren (Annie) Ganser of Osceola; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Fred graduated for Central Catholic High School in South Bend. Upon graduation, he went to work for his father, who was the manager at Kroger's in Mishawaka. Fred was promoted to produce manager and then became manager of his own store. He went to work for the then Erwin's Garage before opening Fred and Jim's garage in 1953 with his business partner, Jim Leliaert. Fred retired in 1990 and the business was sold to their sons. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka and was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1083.
Fred loved to ice skate and spent many hours teaching kids to ice skate. He loved being on the water, whether it be boating or water skiing. Fred was always very active and he loved to dance, especially with his number 1 dance partner, Lois. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 21 in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka.
