SOUTH BEND - John Edward Doran, known to his family and friends as "Jack", died on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 8:06 a.m. at Hospice House. Jack was born in South Bend on October 27, 1927 to the late M. Edward and Edna Mae (Hartford) Doran. He attended St. Joseph Grade School and Central Catholic High School from which he graduated in 1945. Jack began his college education at the University of Notre Dame, wishing to pursue a degree in law. His classes were interrupted when he was drafted by the Army. Upon his return to Notre Dame, Jack earned a B.S. degree in 1951, and a J.D. degree in 1952. After graduation, Jack joined his father's law firm of Doran, Manion, Boynton & Kamm. Later he formed the law firm of Doran & Blackmon where he practiced until his retirement. Jack was a member of the St. Joseph County Bar Association, serving as President in 1979. He also held memberships in the Indiana State and American Bar Associations, Indiana Defense Lawyers Association (Diplomat), Defense Research Institute, and was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was a life-long Democrat and served as President of the St. Joseph County Election Board for 18 years. A long-time member of the Cathedral of St. Matthew, Jack also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Council 533. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and a Notre Dame fan and supporter. Jack was also a member of the Indiana Club. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a twin-sister, Mary Ann (Joe) Roemer, and a brother, James W. Doran. He is survived by his wife, Marianne (Wack) Doran and their six children, Maribeth (Tom) Curry, Edward J. Doran, James T. (Kimberly) Doran, Kathleen (Greg) Childers, Meg (Frank) Rotundo and Amy Doran Galecki plus 17 grandchildren. Jack's sisters, Margaret Rose (David) Walter and Marilyn (Donald) Dennig also survive. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 16, at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. Matthew with burial following at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
