SOUTH BEND, IN - Irene A. Mentag, 97, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2019 in Healthwin Nursing Facility. Irene was born January 31, 1921 in South Bend to the late Felix and Mary A. (Mezykowski) Szymanowski. On July 4, 1946, Irene married her loving husband, Louis J. Mentag. He preceded her in death, along with her daughter-in-law, Cathy Mentag; and dear brothers & sisters. Survivors of Irene include her sons, James (Mary) Mentag of Chesterton and Gary Mentag of South Bend; grandchildren, Carly Crawford, Jessica (Doug) Lubelski, Ryan Mentag, and Kevin (Nicole) Mentag; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Irene worked for Studebaker for many years, and retired from South Bend Control. She was a parishioner of St. Patricks Catholic Church. Irene was a member of the Holy Family Hoosiers, the Grandmothers Club, St. Adalbert Harvest House, St. Joseph Association Local 1760, and UAW Local 5. She was a very social, friendly person. After Irene was unable to participate in her clubs and groups, she enjoyed the events held at Healthwin, where she was crowned Prom Queen in 2017. She also enjoyed crafts, bingo, gardening, and flowers. She was an avid Notre Dame fan. Irene loved visiting with her family, especially her grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 2:00pm to 8:00pm, in ST. JOSEPH Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 11:00am Friday, January 25, 2019 in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
