H. George Waechter, 81, of South Bend, Ind., died Thursday morning, Dec. 12, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Mr. Waechter retired in 1969 from the South Bend Fire Department after 20 years, and retired in 1983 from the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center after 10 years. He was born on June 17, 1921, in South Bend, to George and Mathilda (Navie) Waechter, who preceded him in death. On May 22, 1943, in South Bend, he married Mary Winifred Walsh, who survives. He is also survived by their daughter, Mary Ann Waechter of Mishawaka, Ind.; and by a son, Gerald M. Waechter of South Bend. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN (574/289-1000 Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola., Ind. Friends may call from noon until time of services Saturday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 715 E. Wayne, South Bend, IN 46617; or to the American Cancer Society. The Waechter family wishes to extend their appreciation to the oncology department and staff at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.
