SOUTH BEND - John L. Stockbridge, 91, of South Bend died Monday, April 15, 2013 in Hospice House, Elkhart. John was born February 7, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Lyman and Cora (Peterson) Stockbridge. On June 18, 1949 in Mishawaka he married Charlotte M. Varda who survives along with daughters, Janet Stockbridge of Indianapolis, IN, Jean Wolf of Buchanan, MI and Judy Stockbridge of Carroll, Iowa; sons John D. (Linda) of Fort Wayne, James L. (Pam) of Mishawaka, Joe C. (Marla) of Mishawaka and Craig (Carol) Stockbridge of South Bend; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A sister, Jean Ogden, also preceded John in death.John retired after 35 years' service with I & M Electric Co. as a lineman. He was a charter member of the Harris Township Volunteer Fire Department and served as Chief. John gave of himself to others and loved to volunteer to help those he could. He was a member of the United States Coast Guard and was discharged in 1946. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He was our "Superman". A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013 in St. Pius X Catholic church and burial will follow with Military Honors in Riverview Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. and one hour prior to Mass in the Church Monday. A Rosary will be prayed at 3:45 p.m. Sunday In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Dad's spirit of Volunteerism, donations may be made to The Center for Hospice Care, Busy Hands or Habitat for Humanity.
