NEW CARLISLE - Eugene J. Kovas, 86, of New Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Franciscan St. Anthony's Hospice, Michigan City. He was born October 25, 1928, in New Carlisle, to the late Louis and Theresa (Racz) Kovacsics. He was married to Gwendolyn Slack in Niles, MI, in 1953, who preceded him in death in 1964. Along with his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Irma Bingaman; and by four brothers, Joe and Louis Kovacsics, March and Steve Kovas. Eugene is survived by his three daughters, Theresa (Roger) Kessler and Becky Mireles, both of New Carlisle, and Cindy (Glen) Combs of Rolling Prairie, IN; two sons, Jim (Peggy) Kovas of Goodrich, MI, and Dale Kovas of New Carlisle; nine grandchildren, Bryan (Teresa) Kovas, Greg Kovas, Amy Kovas, Mike Kessler, Melissa Kessler, Ty (Heather) Mireles, Jacob Mireles, Derrick Miller and Kevin Miller; and by three great-grandchildren, Jordan Kessler and Erilyn and Wesley Kovas. Mr. Kovas graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1946. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952, with the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Kovas was a local Dairyman and Farmer for 51 years and was a member of the Farm Bureau COOP. He also drove a school bus for the New Prairie School Corporation for 22 years. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. EST on Sunday, October 4, 2015, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., New Carlisle. Funeral services will take place in the funeral home at 10 a.m. EST Monday October 5, 2015, with burial at New Carlisle Cemetery.
