SOUTH BEND - Joseph G. Ganus, 95, passed away at 10:20 am Thursday, January 24, 2013 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Joseph was born September 22, 1917 in Poland to the late Galdys (Mejer) Ganus. Joseph came to America in 1920 and on May 28, 1938 he married Irene Burzynski; she preceded him in death on October 11, 2005. Joseph is also preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory and his brothers, Louis, Henry and Alex Ganus. Joseph is survived by two daughters , Bev Pilarski of South Bend and Charlotte Meller of Mishawaka; grandsons, Michael (Kozue) Pilarski of Manila, Philippines and Greg (Lori) Meller of Junction City, OR; granddaughters, Rita Dimm of Colorado Springs, CO, Jessica Smith of Goshen, IN, Charmaine Lange of Mishawaka, IN, and Monique (David) DeMaegd of Mishawaka, IN; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Joseph retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation in 1983 after 21 years of employment; he also worked for Studebaker's for 26 years. He was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Casimir. Joseph was a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #435, the St. Joseph Young Men's Society and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal AFL-CIO-Local 686. Joseph lived in South Bend the greater part of his life, with the exception of the years 2000-2005 when he lived in Kenner, LA with his daughter, Beverly. Hurricane Katrina brought him back to South Bend, but he always wished to go back if there would not be any hurricanes in the future. Joe enjoyed playing Euchre and fishing, and his four-footed companions, Babe and Dolly and Lady. Visitation for Joseph will be held 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday, January 27, 2013 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 28, 2013 in the funeral home.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
