On 5 Jun 1917 Walter registered for the U.S. WWI draft. His draft registration card indicated that he was single, 21 years old and was living at 112 Francis St. In Joliet, Illinois. He was born in Bodzechow, Poland and had his first papers for U.S. citizenship. Walter's trade was listed as "car repairer".Walter married Louise Slomski in 1928. After his death in 1939, Louise submitted a request to the War Department for a Granite grave marker. The application indicated enlistment date of Aug. 29, 1917 and discharge date of Aug. 15, 1919. That form listed that he was Pvt. 1/c in 320 Repair Unit, Motor Transport Corp.
