SOUTH BEND - James L. Mankowski, 88, of South Bend, died in his home on November 12th, 2014, after a brief illness. He was born on March 13, 1926, in Peru, Illinois, to Joseph Mankowski and Beatrix (Schweickert) Mankowski. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Joan Mankowski, and a brother, Joseph Mankowski. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Alice Mankowski, who died on October 16th of this year. He is survived by sisters, Mary Anne Foran, and Charlotte (Donald) Clark; children, Mark (Mary Jo) Mankowski, Paul Mankowski, Joan Mankowski, Ellen (David) Tuchler and Mary (Robert) Korajczyk; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was for many years employed by the Bendix Corporation. He was a member of St. Pius X Parish in Granger; in later years, of Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame. The family wishes in particular to express its esteem for and gratitude to the Center for Hospice Care, its staff and caregivers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Basilica at Notre Dame on Monday, November 17, at 9:30 a.m. A wake will take place at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, on November 16 from 2 to 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Woman's Care Center of South Bend, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Center for Hospice Care of South Bend, or to the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa.
