Irene Witkowski

Irene Witkowski, 96, of West 7th Street, Mishawaka, in, passed away peacefully at 7:25 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2006, in the Holy Cross Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. Irene was born on June 21, 1910, in South Bend, in. On August 22, 1931, in St. Hedwig Catholic Church, South Bend, as the former Irene Egierski, she married Joseph Witkowski, who preceded her in death on February 11, 1996. Her parents, John and Helen Egierski, and four brothers, Stanley Egierski, Walter Egierski, George Eager and John Egierski, also preceded Irene in death. Irene is survived by two sons, Eugene (Sandra) Witkowski of Granger, in, and Richard (Donna) Witkowski of New Carlisle, in; one daughter, Eleanor (Ronald) Manuel of Mishawaka, in; eight grandchildren, Daniel Witkowski, Kevin Witkowski, Susan Carlton, Pat Manuel, Sheila Dill, Christine Szalewski, Brian Witkowski and Mark Witkowski; and by 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Irene is also survived by one brother, Jerry Egierski of South Bend, in; and three sisters, Catherine Borkowski of Pinellas Park, Florida, Dolores Lootens of Lakeland, Florida, and Adeline Otto of Ivanhoe, Minnesota. Irene attended St. Hedwig Elementary School, South Bend, where she graduated from the eighth grade. She then went to work as a waitress at a local restaurant, spent several years working in the shirt department of Wilson Brothers of South Bend and then was employed by the former Uniroyal Corporation in Mishawaka for five years before leaving to start a family. Irene also worked many happy years as a housekeeper of the Albert and Lovell Rogers family of South Bend. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, a member of the Rosary Society, the Kosciusko Club of Mishawaka, the Uniroyal Retirees Club and the Mishawaka High School Boosters Club. An avid sports fan she never missed a game when her two sons played for Mishawaka High School. She may have set a record for all the times she said Rosaries for family and friends for which we all owe her many thanks. Family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, November 28th, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th, Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 29th, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Contributions in memory of Irene may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, in 46544.
