Gilberto Francisco Benitez y Richard, 69, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at his home. He was born October 4, 1953, in Havana, Cuba, to Gilberto Tomas Benitez and Migdalia Richard. Gilberto loved slot car racing and was an award-winning model builder. He even drove rally cars. He became a naturalized American citizen at age 21. Gilberto was Larger than Life. Gilberto was united in marriage on October 29, 1999, to Sandra Hackemann, who survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Kathy (Brian) Rogers of Carmel, Indiana, and Eleanor (Donn Hussey) Wehner of Warsaw, Indiana; his son, Randall Wehner of Mishawaka, Indiana; his two grandchildren, Daniel and Charles Rogers of Carmel, Indiana; and his brother, Jorge (Chris) Benitez of Goshen, Ohio. Per the wishes of the family, no services will be held. Palmer Funeral Homes - River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
