Sylvester J. Sowinski
March 26, 1921 - June 3, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Sylvester J. Sowinski, 89, known to everyone as "Sal," passed away on 3 June 2010. A member of the "Greatest Generation," Sal was born in South Bend, Indiana, to Anton Sowinski and Prakseda (Anna) Taberski Sowinski. He attended Woodrow Wilson School and lived his entire life in South Bend, only leaving to serve in the Navy Seabees during WW II. In the Seabees Sal was a member of A Company of the 125th Naval Construction Battalion. Within the battalion he was also a member of Carlstrom's Raiders, where no mission or job was too tough. They worked their way across the Pacific, Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, and finally Okinawa. In 1945 he returned to South Bend and married Dorothy Louise Hummel of Pittsburg PA. He started working at Oliver's Farm Equipment Co., later taken over by the White Farm Equipment Co. He had a talent for making anything with his hands and worked in the machine shop for 37 years, retiring in 1978. An avid carpenter and woodworker, he built his own house with the help of his family in 1955. Sal was a hardworking family man who enjoyed all sports and was actively involved in softball, golf, bowling, fishing, woodworking and gardening. He was a lifelong member of Holy Family Church of South Bend. As a life member of VFW Post 9820 he spent many days volunteering his time supporting veterans in the local area and served as post commander from 1973-74. Sal is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Louise Sowinski; daughters, Christine Roberts and Judith McLean; and sons, David and Thomas Sowinski. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2010, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2010, in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Sal was very much loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN 46619. For those who are unable to attend the funeral liturgy, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
