Irene J. Niezgodski, 86, of Arcadia Avenue in South Bend, Ind., passed away at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Niezgodski retired from Pioneer Savings and Loan (formerly Industrial Savings and Loan), and was previously employed by the South Bend License Branch and Northern Indiana Wholesale. Mrs. Niezgodski was born on Sept. 27, 1912, in South Bend, to Frank and Jennie (Walkowiak) Gierzynski. On Oct. 6, 1937, in South Bend, as Irene J. Gierzynski, she married Modest J. Niezgodski, who preceded her in death on May 4, 1998.
She is survived by a son, Paul F. (Karen) Niezgodski of South Bend; two grandchildren, Kallie (Mark) Young of South Bend and Beth (Craig) Toner of Granger, Ind.; and by two great-grandchildren, Lacie Young and Spencer Toner. Mrs. Niezgodski was a member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, the Golden Cluster, the South Bend Fireman's Auxiliary, Z.B. Falcons, Legion of Honor, Polish Falcons Nest #80, and Daughters of Isabella, Notre Dame Circle #572.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, in St. Hedwig Catholic Church, with Rev. Leonard F. Chrobot officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a combined parish, Golden Cluster and Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. The Z.B. Falcons, Legion of Honor, will follow the Rosary with a prayer service.
