Conrad J. Opaczewski

MISHAWAKA - Conrad "Opie" J. Opaczewski, 67, of Mishawaka, died at 8:20 a.m. Saturday, June 5 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. He was born on September 17, 1942 to the late Edmund and late Violet (Nowak) Opaczewski in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with his parents, one brother, Richard Opaczewski also preceded him in death. Mr. Opaczewski retired in 1999 from the Bendix Corporation, where he worked as a tool and die maker for 35 years. In June 1965, he married Claudia Kreiger in South Bend. She died in February 1991. He then married Jeanne "JJ" (Stout) James on April 20, 1999 in Las Vegas, NV. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne "JJ" Opaczewski of Mishawaka; one son, Terry (Tracey) Opaczewski of South Bend; one step-son, Kevin James of Mishawaka; three grandchildren, Cole, Caitlyn, and Connor Opaczewski, all of South Bend; three sisters, Joan Kitkowski of South Bend; Diana Wassenhove of South Bend; Susan (Bob) Drabecki of Fort Wayne; and one brother, Robert "Butch" Opaczewski of Bremen. Opie was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post #357, United Auto Workers Union, and Elkhart Moose Lodge; and a volunteer for the German Township Fire Department for 15 years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and was an avid NASCAR racing fan. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm on Tuesday, June 8 in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, June 9 in Kaniewski Funeral Home, with Rev. Msgr. Bernard Galic officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #357.
