South Bend - Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, March 4, 2018.He was born January 7, 1924 to the late Ignatius and Anna (Sosnoski) Wawrzyniak. On June 30, 1951 Irvin married Helen (Borek) Wawrzyniak, she preceded him in death. Irvin is also preceded in death by five sisters and their husbands, Martha (Tom) Kroll, Esther (Joe) Kozlowski, Evelyn (Pete) Norris, Irene (Casimir) Walorski, and Loretta (Frank) Fershin. Irvin leaves behind four children, Charles (Gail) Wawrzyniak, Peggy (Joe) Rutkowski, Linda (Marc) Monroe and Sharon (Vince) Jones; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Frank) Wieczorek.Irvin grew up on Dunham St., in South Bend. In 1942 he entered the military and honorably served his country in the United States Army. He served in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany earning an EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Campaign Stars for battles in Naples, Rome, Rhineland, Southern France and Central Europe, along with a Combat Infantry Badge. He was also awarded the Bronze Medal, Victory Medal and one Invasion Arrowhead. Irvin retired a proud teamster from Tucker Freight Line in 1983. He was an avid golfer, reader, gardener and fisherman. He loved fishing on Lake Michigan and inland lakes. Irvin also enjoyed a good game of euchre at the Battel Center, poker at Bowlers Country Club, crossword puzzles every morning and he was also a whiz at Jeopardy. Dad had a quick wit and sharp mind that he retained until the end. After being a steady and vigilant caretaker for our mother until her death in 2007, he independently lived on his own until his passing. Dad was honest, hardworking and told us what he thought, like it or not. He was always there to help and support us; Dad was in our corner no matter what. Dad, along with Mom will be missed but never forgotten by all of us. Cremation will take place and a Celebration of Life and burial will be announced at a later date. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, Mayflower Rd. is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
