Lewis LaVon Haney, 76, of E. Brick Road, South Bend, Ind., died at 12:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, in his home. He was a retired truck driver for Ace Van Lines, North American Van Lines, and Ashland Chemical. He was born on Feb. 2, 1923, in Columbia City, Ind. On April 26, 1947, in South Bend, he married Dorothy Ewing, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Rebecca S. (Don) Galeziewski of South Bend; a son, Gregory L. (Mona) Haney of Niles, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Anne M. (Ed) Switalski, Daniel Galeziewski, Jennifer Galeziewski, Michele Galeziewski, Troy Haney, Ryan Haney and Lisa Haney; and by two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Switalski and Samantha Switalski. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldon and Verlin. Lewis was a member of Christ the King Church and VFW Post 624 of Roseland, Ind. He loved basketball, softball, baseball, track, swimming, bowling, woodworking and building homes. He was a World War II Army veteran.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where a Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
