Die hard Cubs fans have high hopes for World Series
by Molly Jirasek, WSBT 22 ReporterWednesday, November 2nd 2016
SOUTH BEND - Anna Fuchs and Sy Siade both live at Grand Emerald Place senior living in South Bend, and both learned a lot about each other Wednesday as the bonded over the perfect commonality: they're both Cubs fans. “I remember all the old ball players," said Siade. “Andy Pafko, remember Andy Pafko," Fuchs asked.
Siade remembers them all he said, “Ernie Bank, Ron Santo, Ryan Sandberg.” Siade said he's a Mishawaka native, and WWII veteran. He was on the USS Missouri he said. ”They used to have a club that was called the 'Die hard Cub Fan Club', And I belonged to that," he said. Fuchs face lit up. "Where at? The Midway Tavern?" she asked. Siade responded with an enthusiastic, "Yeah!" Turns out, Fuchs was a part of the same club, "That's where I went," she said, "Midway Tavern." Fuchs is a big sports fan. She said she used to have season tickets to Notre Dame women's basketball and volleyball. She also said she remembers going to Cubs games on the South Shore with her uncle. It was her uncles, she said, who got her wanting to play baseball. "I played at Potawatomi Park," she said. Fuchs said her team was called the Mustangs, and took on many names over the years. She said they were an amateur women's baseball team, but they got to "run around" with the pros as she said. She said she got to know lots of the South Bend Blue Sox, the professional girls baseball team. We asked Fuchs when she became a Cubs fan. “Oh God when I think the first time I turned a radio on," she said.
Despite the team's Championship drought, Fuchs said she has always found a way to cheer them on anyway.
“We’d always shrug our shoulder and off we’d go next year. And here it is and of course it’s gonna be tonight!”
She admitted, she's worried about Wednesday night's big game. “I think it’ll just be like, well another year, next year, that’s the way we’ll have to look at it. But I don’t wanna look at it that way cause we’re gonna win tonight." She and Siade said they have a big reason why they want the Cubs to win. “We’d die happy," said Siade with a laugh. Fuchs agreed, “With all the rest of the Cubs fans we’ll all die happy!” Fuchs said she was featured in the popular movie, "A League of Their Own," during the scene where the Rockford Peaches are getting off the team bus. Fuchs said she's the one handing out the uniforms to the girls. “It was a funny thing we knew the lines better than they did because they had to repeat them so often, and we were in the background; we knew the lines better than they did." Though she said she got to meet celebrities like Madonna and Geena Davis, that wasn't her favorite part. “Great to be with the rest of the girls," she said. Fuchs said the film offered a reunion for many of the original players of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League.
