SOUTH BEND - Gibbi Antonio Aversa, 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at the Regional Hospital in Locri, Italy. He was born on November 26, 1929, in Gerace, Italy. On October 26, 1963, he married Francesca Romano, who survives. Also surviving are his children: Mariella (Bruno) Femia, Graziella Aversa and Michelangelo Aversa; his grandchildren, Fabio Femia, Chiara Femia, and Sara Stefanelli, all of Gerace; his sister, Lina (Pietro) Raschilla', and brother, Salvatore Aversa, both of Rome, Italy; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins both in Italy and South Bend, Indiana. Gibbi was a master mason who built and oversaw the construction of many brick and stone homes in his native Italy. He tended his animals and garden with extreme care, producing an abundance to the delight of his family and neighbors. Funeral services were held in Gerace, Italy, following which he was entombed in the Aversa Family Chapel. A local memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend, Indiana, with Rev. Edmund J. Sylvia, C.S.C., officiating. The Mass is given by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Pietro and Teresa Agostino, and Pasquale and Mary Romano, who recall many wonderful memories together from childhood to adulthood celebrating family events.
