SOUTH BEND - Monica E. Szweda (Monie), 81, of South Bend, passed away on Friday, October 25th, in her residence surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Szweda was born on December 9, 1931, in South Bend, and had resided in the area her lifetime. On May 9, 1953, she married Jerry R. Szweda, who preceded her in death on June 6, 2010. Surviving are two daughters, Lynn M. Szweda and Lori A. Szweda, both of South Bend; and one son, Mark J. Szweda of South Bend. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Shane and Erin Cantu, Olivia Flanagan, and one great-granddaughter, Lilliana Cantu, all whom she loved and cherished. She is also survived by one sister, Renata Kazmierczak of South Bend, and one brother, Edward Kurpiewski, South Bend. Monica was also preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Mary (Lyczynski) Kurpiewski, and one sister, Florence Roggeman. Monnie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Over the years she worked fulltime at Oliver Plow Works and then Victory (Bailey's) Beauty Supply. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a kind and generous woman who will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place in honor of Monnie's wishes; there will be no visitation hours or public services. A private memorial Mass will be set at Christ the King Catholic Church with family members only. The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., located at 111 Sunnybrook Court. South Bend, IN 46637. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home and Cremation Services handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Szweda family.
