LA PORTE - Benjamin J. Macalka, 91, La Porte, died at 3 p.m., Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2008) at his residence. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Burial will be at Pine Lake Cemetery, following the Service. The LaPorte Honor Guard will conduct graveside services at the cemetery.Visitation will be held Friday, October 3, 2008 4-8 p.m., and Sat. 8-9:30 a.m., at Essling Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service held at the funeral home on Friday at 5 p.m., and a Falcon Memorial Service at 5:15 P.M. Mr. Macalka was born April 5, 1917 in LaPorte, to Daniel & Katarzyna (Mendel) Macalka.On April 3, 1948 in LaPorte, he married Wanda V. Baczkiewicz, who survives. He leaves behind his wife Wanda of LaPorte; two daughters, Dorothy Macalka and Valerie (James) Young both of LaPorte; one son, Joseph (Karen) Macalka of LaPorte; two grandsons, David and Timothy Macalka; two great grandchildren, Hannah and Kyle Macalka; one sister, Helen Macalka of LaPorte and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his parents and 2 brothers, Walter and Theodore Macalka. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Porte.He retired after 38 years of service as a Moulder at Teledyne Casting Corporation. He was a member of Sacred Heart Holy Name Society, Church Usher, Funeral Mass Server, Polish Falcons Nest 564, Gold Medal Legion of Honor Member, Polish Falcons Board of Directors, Polish National Alliance 1120, Former Financial Secretary for P.N.A. Club 1120, U.S. Army Veteran of World War II (Signal Corps), and a Volunteer for Meals on Wheels.Memorial contributions may be made to to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are being handled by Essling Funeral Home.

Macalka celebrates 90th
Ben J. Macalka of 120 Belden St. in La Porte was honored for his 90th birthday during a family celebration recently.Ben was born April 5, 1917, in La Porte to Daniel and Kathryn Macalka. He married Wanda V. Baczkiewicz April 3, 1948.Ben and Wanda have three children, Joseph, Dorothy and Valerie Young, all of La Porte. They also have two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ben is retired from Teledyne Casting Service in La Porte and is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Porte.
