MISHAWAKA - Harvey C. Ludwig, 84, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, September 18th, 2014 at Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family, after a short illness. He was born in Mishawaka on May 20th, 1930 to Russell and Clara (Fites) Ludwig, who preceded him in death. On June 18th, 1950, he married the former Charlotte L. Butts and after fifty-six years of marriage, she passed away in 2006. Harvey was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra K. Sienicki in 2012, a son, Mark S. Ludwig in 2014 and a brother, Albert R. Ludwig in 1997. Harvey is survived by his son, Russell (Betty) Ludwig of Mishawaka along with three grandchildren: Amber (Dan) Schmidtke of St. Louis, Missouri, Joel Ludwig of Mishawaka and Brandon (Jenny) Ludwig of South Bend. He also has a great granddaughter, Olivia Rose Ludwig of South Bend. Also surviving are a sister, Lydia (Chet) Mechling of Idaho Falls, Idaho and a sister-in-law, Jean Ludwig of Elkhart and many nieces and nephews. Harvey was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mishawaka. He was a 1949 graduate of Mishawaka High School. In 1965, Harvey founded, along with other partners, Superior Piece Parts, Inc. in Mishawaka, where he later became President in 1973. The business flourished for 43 years, until his retirement in 2008. Harvey became the youngest charter member of the North Penn Township Fire Dept. at the age of 23, serving the community for over 50 years. He served as Fire Chief from 1961 through 1964 and was the fourth district chairman of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association from 1963 through 1968. He served as Fire Department Treasurer and was a loyal worker at smokers and other fund-raisers. In his early years, he farmed on his dad's land, which is now Walt Disney School and Windingbrook. He worked as an apprentice at the former Lovett Tool and Die Manufacturing shop while he also fought fires. Harvey was also a Gold Member of the Ushers Club at Notre Dame. He ushered for over 40 years at the Fighting Irish football games. Harvey loved to travel. He went on numerous trips, but especially loved going to New York where he would canoe and kayak with his friends. Sauder Village, in Ohio, was also one of his favorite places to visit. He was an avid hunter and went on many hunting trips out west with the guys, which he thoroughly enjoyed. In 1972, Harvey donated a kidney to his brother Albert, and with this gift, Al was able to spend 25 more years with his family. Harvey was a very kind and giving man. He would do anything for his family and friends. Everyone who knew him, loved him. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter very, very much. Funeral services for Harvey will be held on Friday, September 26th, at 10:30 am, at St. Peter Lutheran Church on Dragoon Trail in Mishawaka. Friends will be received from 2 until 8 pm on Thursday at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka and one hour prior to the services on Friday at the church. Entombment will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church or to the Center for Hospice
