Jacob H. "John" Abraham
Feb. 1, 1927 - Jan. 10, 2012 SOUTH BEND - Jacob "John" Abraham, 84, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2012, in Memorial Hospital following a month-long battle with heart failure. John was born February 1, 1927, in Michigan City, IN, to the late Jennie (Nick) and Jacob Abraham, and had lived in South Bend since 1949, coming from Michigan City. John married the woman he called "George," Pauline Habhab, on July 15, 1951, in Fort Dodge, IA. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past summer. He is survived by Pauline; son, David Abraham (Marianne) of Sharpsburg, GA; and as he told all the nurses and doctors in the hospital, his three beautiful daughters, Paula Abraham-VonBergen (Jim), Mary Albright (Greg) and Janis Logsdon (George), all of South Bend. Also surviving are his grandchildren, David (Emily) and Alicia Hess, Drew and Derek Albright, Jackie and Madie Logsdon, and Kyle, Jason and Allison Abraham; great-grandchildren, his namesake, Abraham Jacob Hess, and Cory Hess; and sister, Lila Ivy, and brother, Charles "Bud" Abraham, both of Michigan City. Uncle John was the "favorite" uncle and leaves many nieces and nephews as well as longtime "family," George and Nancy London Warrick, who will always cherish him. Preceding him in death were two grandchildren, Brittney and Cory Abraham; his sister, Madeline Habhab; and brothers, Allie, Hassen and Gene Abraham. John retired from Gilbert's Men's Store as vice president of retail sales in 1989 after 35 years. He then continued his career as a professor at St. Mary's College and Notre Dame University, which he was most proud of. At the age of 60 he began his 24-year career as a substitute teacher for the South Bend Community School Corporation. John was a member of the former South Bend Exchange Club and South Bend Press Club, and was currently a member of St. Joseph Lodge #45 F& AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Orak Shrine Temple and The Islamic Center of Michigan City. He was also a proud veteran of World War II. John's passions and hobbies were his family, friends and life. He faced many challenges while caring for his wife and the disease that robbed her mind from him. However, our father lived every day by seizing the day - "Carpe Diem." Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Committal services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, January 13th, from 4 until 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and from one hour prior to services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's and Dimentia Services, 922 E. Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN, 46617. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
