[N31384] Carolyn S Rowe
August 14, 1929 - February 8, 2022

Carolyn S. Ushela, 92, residing in South Bend, departed for heaven on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Schubert Villa - Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, where she met many family and friends awaiting her arrival. Carolyn was born on August 14, 1929, in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Orville and Alice (Blough) Rowe and has lived in the South Bend area since 1950. Carolyn was a graduate of Elkhart High School in 1947 and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1950. She spent her first years in nursing at Northern Indiana Children’s Hospital in South Bend treating Polio patients, working under the leadership of Dr. R. Walter Erickson, M.D. Carolyn was a homemaker and worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at The South Bend Clinic and then in private practice with Dr. Howard Engel, M.D, before retiring in 1989. On April 25, 1953, at the Our Lady Chapel, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame, she was united in marriage to Clarence W. “Sackey” Ushela, who preceded her in death on September 21, 2001. Carolyn’s grandson, Peter, sisters, Mary Nelson, Barbara Macer, and Kathryn Eley and brothers, Phil and Jack Rowe also preceded her in death. Carolyn is survived by her daughters, Alice Ann Ushela and Susan M. Ushela, both of South Bend; sons, Charles W. (Pilar) Ushela of Lima, Peru, and George A. Ushela of Sturgis, MI and grandchildren, Charlotte P. Ushela and Selene M. Ushela and many nieces and nephews. Carolyn loved her time in South Bend raising her family in Edison Park neighborhood, summers at Klinger Lake, gatherings with her Elkhart friends and many great years in Green Valley, AZ. She learned to appreciate and embrace her many years of journey to Shenandoah, PA where Sackey was raised. Carolyn was a great wife, mother, grandmother, enduring the challenges of parenting and still loving us all, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend. Carolyn is whole again and free to join her family and friends while looking over us with a loving eye and heart. Breathe in your new life and breathe easy! A special thanks to the staff at Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, Heartland Hospice and Senior Helpers for her care. A special thank you to Aster Wade, who provided great care and companionship to Carolyn. Per Carolyn’s wishes, no services will be held. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Enichment will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 230 W Catalpa Dr D, Mishawaka, IN 46545 or Holy Cross Village Foundation, P.O. Box 303, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
