Gary S. Veatch, 75, residing in South Bend, passed away at 9:15 pm Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in Hospice House. He was born in Elkhart on August 10, 1936 to the late George and Lena (Jackson) Veatch and lived in South Bend for most of his life. Gary worked in the grocery business for over thirty years, predominately with Martin's Supermarkets. He then owned and operated Gary's Floors & Walls. On March 16, 1996 in Scotland, Gary married the former Fay McKechnie, who survives. In addition to his loving wife, Fay, Gary is survived by one daughter, Shelley Bender of Elkhart; one son, Jeff (Karen) Veatch of Walkerton; three stepdaughters, Michelle (John) Nichelson of Edwardsburg and Andrea (Terry) Szczypiorski and Audrey Castle, both of North Liberty; and two stepsons, Christopher (Jennifer) Buscoe and Mark Buscoe, both of South Bend. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Lauren, Heidi, Ryan, Paige, Faith, Kristina, Christopher, Tracey, Connor, Leann, Allen and Eddie; two great grandchildren, Makenzie and Makenna; one sister, Peggy (Lyle) Hasty of Florida; loving nieces and nephews and their families in Florida; as well as loving family in Scotland, including the McDonald family, especially his sweet sister in law, Rose McDonald. The Veatch family would like to thank Dr. Park and his staff at Cancer Care Partners, Dr. Gongwer and his staff, and all of the staff at the Center for Hospice Care for the wonderful care given to Gary. Funeral services for Gary will be 2:00 pm Sunday, October 23, 2011 in Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635 with Rev. Greg Crump officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 - 2:00 pm at the funeral home prior to services. Contributions in memory of Gary may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
