Virginia C. Bartels, 72, of Golden Pheasant Ave., Osceola, passed away on Monday at 9:37 am at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, following a sudden illness. She was born in South Bend on July 7, 1937 to Leo and Anna (Muelmann) Nowicki who preceded her in death along with one grandchild. As Virginia Kershner, she married Ralph Bartels following the death of her first husband, Verling George Kershner in 1973. Mrs. Bartels was a teller for Notre Dame Credit Union for many years. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Foresters and St. Pius X Catholic Church. She loved her flower gardens. Her hobbies included knitting and collecting angels. She is survived by her children, George (Barbara) Kershner, David Kershner and Kevin Kershner. Her sisters, Mary Ann (Michael) Rafalski of South Bend, Gerry (Thomas) Sternal of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Betty (Skeeter) Skodinski of Orting, Washington and Catherine Nowicki of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Also surviving are her stepchildren, Sonja Jelinski, Sylvia Elias and Cindy Moss. Her grandchildren, Melynda Coy, Lucas (Emily) Wolfe, Amanda (Rob) Leader, Lance Kershner, Rachel (Greg) Toney Kershner, Lane (Johnelle) Kershner, Sandra Kershner, Cynthia (Jay) Morgan, Loren Kershner, Karen Kershner and Erin Gray. Great Grandchildren, Courtney, Cassandra, Carrissa, Della, Joey, Payton, Paige, Lexie, Mason, Natalie, Dillon, Kaitlyn, Ashton, Layla, Jessica, and Albany. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger at 10:00am on Saturday, September 5th. Friends will be received from 4 until 8pm on Friday, September 4th in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St. and also one hour prior to the mass on Saturday at the church. Entombment will follow at a later date at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
