One killed in shooting at South Bend home Sunday
Police say a family dispute led to a fatal shooting late Sunday night at a home in South Bend's River Park neighborhood. James Griffin, 47, is being held on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter in the death of 25-year-old Curdin Gizewski, officials with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said in a statement Monday afternoon. Gizewski was found after police responded to reports of a shooting about 10 p.m. to a home in the 1300 block of South 31st Street. At least one more adult and two children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was hurt, South Bend police said. There were also dogs inside the house. None of them were hurt, either.
At the scene late Sunday night, city police Sgt. John Riddle said everyone at the home had cooperated with police. The children who were in the home are with their family, Riddle also said.
The exact relationship between Gizewski and Griffin was not immediately clear. The Metro Homicide statement said only that Griffin was "known to the victim." Griffin's jail booking photograph showed signs of a struggle, as his face appeared scuffed and swollen. Voluntary manslaughter is defined by Indiana law as knowingly killing another person while acting in "sudden heat." An autopsy for Gizewski was scheduled for Tuesday morning in Kalamazoo, Mich. Prosecutors had not filed formal charges against Griffin as of Monday afternoon.
