Robert O. Barthel, 90, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on October 24, 2013 at 12:08 p.m. Robert was born in LaPorte, Indiana on June 16, 1923 to Leonard J. and Beatrice I. (Lehker) Barthel. Robert is survived by his wife Loretta of 68 years and four remaining children, Sandra Potokar, Karen Nowak, Nancy Burkus, and Chris Barthel. His first born Robert L. preceded him on May 19, 1990. He has nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. He also has numerous nieces and nephews that he loves and who look up to him. Robert served in the Army as a Sergeant from January 23, 1943 to February 23, 1946 during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 26, in Niles, Michigan, and Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Robert was a strong advocate of unions and a proud member of the local 150 International Union of Operating Engineers for 45 years, retiring from Rieth Riley. In his retirement Robert enjoyed wood working and shared his projects with family and relatives to enjoy as well. Robert is most known for his devotion to his wife and family. Robert will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Visitation 4-7 p.m. (which will begin with a Rosary at 4 p.m.), on Tuesday October 29, 2013, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, South Bend, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Riley Hospital for Children, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the Hospice Foundation.
