Peter Bencsics
April 6, 1936 - Sept. 16, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Peter Bencsics, 77, of South Bend, passed away Monday, September 16, 2013, in Hospice House, South Bend. He was born on April 6, 1936, in South Bend, to the late Peter and Theresa (Szaradics) Bencsics, and was a lifelong area resident. Peter's parents were Hungarian immigrants. His father died when Peter was 14. Peter supported his mother until her death 27 years later. On September 10, 1966, he married Mary Martin, who survives. Along with his loving wife of 47 years, he is survived by two sons, Steve (Emily) and Joe Bencsics, both of South Bend; three grandchildren, Andrew, Adam and Alec; and a step-grandson, Aaron. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Theresa Kocsis, Betty Gulbranson and Mary Scarbeck. Mr. Bencsics worked for Bendix and then NIPSCO, where he retired in 1997 after 25 years of service. He was a parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church, an Army Reservist, and a member of Turners. Peter enjoyed golfing and bowling during his working years. During retirement he would frequent antique stores and estate sales. Peter worked a physically demanding job but somehow found the time and energy to garden, repair the cars, fix almost everything around his house, and then help his sons repair and remodel their homes and landscape their yards. In between maintaining his own household and helping his sons, he also would help his sisters, and nieces and nephews. We are truly amazed at what he would do. In his later years, he was able to spend time with his grandsons and pass some of his knowledge to them. Peter had a great sense of humor and shared many laughs through the years with family and friends. The family would like to thank all his caregivers over the last 9 months especially at St. Joseph Medical Center and Hospice House. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Thursday, September 19, 2013, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Friday in Holy Cross Church, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. To send online condolences, please visit www.kaniewski.com.
