SOUTH BEND - Loving husband and devoted father, Frank J. Marek, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday and went home to God. Frank "Frenchie" was born April 6, 1924, in Crumstown, Indiana, to John and Anastasia (Pietrowski) Marek. On May 17, 1947, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, New Carlisle, Indiana, he married his sweetheart, Josephine Kulwicki. She survives along with four children, Louise (Jody) Koselak, Fred, Lorraine Dove and Bill (Kathy); nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Martens; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Edward, Harry and John, his identical twin. Frank lived his entire life in St. Joseph County, Indiana. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 4th Infantry Division, 44th Field Artillery Battalion, as a forward observer. He landed on D-day at Normandy and fought in five European battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion in North Liberty, Indiana. Frank was employed at the Studebaker Corporation for 21 years, where he served as a time-study steward for U.A.W. Local 5. In 1964 he and Josephine purchased the Shamrock Inn in North Liberty, Indiana, which they operated for 10 years. Frank loved music, studied violin at an early age, performed with the South Bend Junior Symphony Orchestra, and formed a country music band with his brother, John. He was a founding member of the Warren Township Volunteer Fire Department and served as assistant chief of the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department. Frank served two terms as Warren Township Trustee. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors, and was a founding member of the Crumstown Conservation Club. He also was a member of the Chain-O'Lakes Conservation Club in Lydick, Indiana. Frank was an avid reader, NASCAR fan, and will be remembered by all for his great sense of humor. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5th, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6th, in the funeral home.
