SOUTH BEND, IN - Joyce Marie (Brunner) Frey died after enduring a long journey with Parkinson's. She was born and raised in the small town of Tremont, IL to Mamie (Koch) and John Brunner. She married Thomas L. Frey, who preceded her in death. Her children from her first marriage with Ronald Hunsicker are: Jonathan Prince; grandchildren Christian, Kyle and Tyler, and Angela Hunsicker (Christopher Daniel); & grandchildren Isabella and Jace. She attended Tremont High School, Goshen and Bluffton College, and later received her M.S. from Indiana University. Joyce was a devoted Special Education Teacher in both elementary and high school settings. She developed a passion for Special Olympics and spent 35 years volunteering for Civitan International. Tom and Joyce took active roles in Civitan, running track and field state games, celebrating special kids birthdays, leadership roles in the local club, and traveling to international conventions. As a long-time member of Hively Mennonite Church, she often taught Sunday and Bible School. Joyce made close friends in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Elkhart, IN and finally South Bend, IN. She and her best friends were Scrabble and board game enthusiasts. After retiring from Elkhart County Schools, when Joyce was not volunteering, she was golfing, wintering in FL, and attending cousins luncheons. She was greatly missed by her family and friends over the past year and will be missed forever.
