1900 census records indicate Gladys was adopted by Leonard C. and Elizabeth (Barber) Powell. Gladys was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Shelbyville as a young child. The records covering this era are missing in the church. In addition, all court records were lost when the Shelby County Court House was destroyed by fire. Gladys attended schools in Shelbyville. After graduating from high school, she attended Shelbyville Business College, 1912-1913. In Elkhart, she worked as a secretary for the Gossard Co., a manufacturer of foundation garments. Gladys died of pulmonary embolus.
