Alvin A. Torzewski, 82, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2005, at Hospice House in South Bend. Mr. Torzewski was born on June 13, 1923, in South Bend, Indiana to Stanley and Bernice (Grzezinski) Torzewski. He retired from the South Bend Fire Department as a firefighter on September 14, 1987, after 38 years of service. On June 14, 1952, Alvin married Beverly J. Smith, who survives. Surviving with his wife of 53 years are his children, Mary Ann (Stanley) Korabek of Granger, Brian Torzewski of South Bend, Mark (Michele) Torzewski of South Bend, David Torzewski of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Stephanie (Ryan), Jacqueline, Allison, Mark, Matthew, Michael and Kaitlin; sisters, Monica Peak, Virginia (Roman) Szymczak; and brothers, Modest (Velma) Torzewski, and Jerome (Barbara) Torzewski. A brother, Daniel Torzewski preceded him in death. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2005, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a Rosary will be held at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2005, in St. Jude Catholic Church, South Bend, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery. Mr. Torzewski was a member of St. Jude Parish, was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the P.N.A. # 83.
