[N151] Jeanette "Jinx" Karaszewski Landy
Nov. 5, 1935 - April 28, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Jeanette "Jinx" Karaszewski Landy you knew her as Jinx passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28 in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 79. A loyal graduate of St. Adalbert's Catholic School who helped plan the school's 100th Anniversary in 2011, Jinx was a proud Pole from South Bend's West Side. Though she moved to "the burbs" when she married, she never forgot those roots. Her heritage meant at lot to Jinx, and it showed in her thirty-year membership in the Chopin Fine Arts Club. She served as secretary for two years, president for two years, and publisher of the illustrated Keynote news letter using her typewriter for over 15 years. After her graduation from South Bend Catholic High School in 1953, she worked at The Torrington Company before becoming a bookkeeper at the The Bendix Corporation in 1959. All the while, she helped her mother Helen (Rybicki) Karaszewski care for her ailing father, Stanley Karaszewski, until his passing in 1966. She married Larry Landy in 1969 and became a homemaker after the birth of their daughter Laura in 1970. Jinx honed her passion for service at St. Pius X Catholic Church. In early years, she was a CCD teacher to first graders and volunteered in the parish office. She was active in the Women's Society making beautiful ceramics for the Christmas Bazaar, which she helped coordinate for several years. She facilitated masses at Tanglewood Nursing Home and made dishes for dozens of funeral luncheons. In later years, she assisted in counting the weekly collection and found comfort in Friday Eucharistic adoration. Jinx also tutored first and second grade students at Swanson Elementary where Laura was a student and served on the PTO Board for several years. After the passing of her mother Helen and Laura's departure for college, Jinx returned to full-time work in 1988, first for the St. Joseph County Auditor's Office, and then the Treasurer's Office. When she retired in 2000, she was given the key to the County. She is predeceased by her sister Frances (Karaszewski) Arpasi, brother-in-law David J. Arpasi Sr., and their daughter Roberta "Bobbie" Mattasits. Jinx is survived by her daughter Laura Landy Carr, son-in-law Chris Carr, and grandson Bryan. Anyone who knew Jinx, from the Knights of Columbus to the folks at Honker's Restaurant, knew that Bryan was the sunshine of her life. Other survivors include Bobbie's husband Mike, daughters Lisa (Johnathan) Gorman and Jill Mullen, and granddaughter Mackenzie Mullen. Also surviving are nephew David (Kristi) Arpasi and his sons D.J. (Claire) Arpasi and Joe (Megan) Arpasi. Friends may visit from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the church on Monday, May 4, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2015 at St. Pius X Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN, with Rev. Msgr. William C. Schooler officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Those who knew her will remember her contagious laughter, wicked sense of humor, endless capacity for listening, and her devotion to family. She craved company rather than attention, and made sure that family and friends were always welcome. She was exceptionally strong in body and in personality and faced challenges in her life head-on. She was boundlessly creative, making beautiful things out of very little. Finally, she made it her life's purpose to give to others, all the way to the end. Memorial contributions can be made to: Chopin Fine Arts Scholarship Fund, 2941 Jamestown Court N., Mishawaka, IN 46545. To send online condolences, please visit www.kaniewski.com.
