Harry Niemier
Sept. 5, 1926 - April 17, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Harry E. Niemier, 88, passed on peacefully to his next adventure the morning of April 17, 2015, following an unexpected and brief illness. He was surrounded by his family. Harry was born in South Bend, Indiana, on September 5, 1926. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Harry was employed at Studebaker's as a tool and die maker. On November 15, 1952, Harry married Marcelle Jane Speybroeck, his bride of 62 years, who survives him. Harry was predeceased by an infant son, Paul Joseph, a grandson, Joshua Speybroeck Niemier, and his parents, siblings and wife's parents. In addition to Marcie, Harry is survived by 6 children and their offspring: Susan Diedrich: Martha (Carlos) and Tyler (Traci); Kristin (Michael) Horvath: Lisa; Charles (Lois Koerner): Sara (JD), Emily (Vince), Matthew (Hope), and Ryan (Kelly); Mary Niemier Thomas: Catherine, Lizzy and Andrew; Tom (Glynis Benbow) Niemier: Morgan and Kamden; and John (Theri Zimmerman) Niemier: Joshua (deceased), Jessica, Leslie (fianc‚ Stuart), and Lauren. In addition to his 16 grandchildren, Harry is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. Harry was the owner/operator of S&S Quality Cleaners for 35 years until his retirement in 1993. In retirement, Harry preferred to start his day with a visit to Christ the King Catholic Church, where he had been a member since 1952, for Mass or a private prayer. Harry also volunteered at Memorial Hospital and enjoyed attending Notre Dame women's basketball games. Harry was a kind and loving husband, an outstanding father and Poppa Harry, and a strong, hard-working man who bowled gracefully, played poker and euchre aggressively, danced joyfully, and tended his family, flower gardens and bird friends lovingly. Harry's firm, lingering handshake was renowned. He will be missed. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Harry's name to Tuition Assistance at Christ the King School or to Memorial Children's Hospital.
