July 25, 1919 - July 11, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Eva Louise Hawkins was born on July 25, 1919, on the family farm in La Center, KY, and died peacefully on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the Hearth at Juday Creek in Granger, just a few weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. She was the youngest of six children, 4 girls and two boys, all who have preceded her in death. She graduated from Ballard County (KY) high school and also attended Holy Cross Jr. College, and the University of Illinois at Urbana. After high school Eva journeyed north to South Bend, IN, to join her sister in working at Wilson Brothers and the Healthwin Hospital. In 1940 she married Edward A. Zatarga and proceeded to immerse herself in the Polish community. Edward preceded her in death in 1962, as well as her daughter Elizabeth (Betty Ann) Huston who died in 2006, and her Godson, Timothy Howells Hanig, Oshkosh, WI. She is survived by her daughter Mary Sue (Ron) Freitag, four grandchildren: Edward Huston, Eania Beach, FL; Denise Huston, Port Clinton, OH; Christopher Freitag, Mishawaka; and Suzanne Freitag, South Bend. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Marie Huston, Miami, FL; Destinee Makalya Davis, Mishawaka; and Ryan (Amber) Roswell, Baltimore, MD; and two great-great grandchildren, Dominic and Kayden Roswell, Baltimore, MD. She was a 70+ year member of the St. Hedwig Catholic church, and served many roles in the parish, starting with elementary school activities during her children's school times. She was in the Rosary Society and the K.I.T. Club and in recent years served for liturgy service and was pleased to be able to work on the team keeping the church pews and surroundings clean and in top shape. She could also be found at many church activities doing financial duties and reports. She was a longtime member of the M.R. Falcons (Gold Legion of Honor), Hoosier Grandmother's club, and St. Adalbert's Harvest & Holy Cross Harvest Club. She worked at the Mezykowski insurance agency, and assisted many folks with their tax preparation. She was particularly proud of her service with the Model Cities and Housing Allowance programs. She was a Notre Dame Fan, having attended their football games during the 1940's and 1950's, when women wore corsages to the games and men wore their Sunday suits. She was also a season-ticket holder for the Men's basketball team for many years. She always rooted for the Chicago Cubs and never gave up hope. The family thanks the staff at Memorial Hospital 12th floor, and the Hospice organization for their kind care. Special thanks to the staff at the Hearth at Juday Creek for all their wonderful care, especially Marty and Giti who lovingly looked after Mom almost as if she was their own Mother. A funeral mass will be offered by Rev. Daryl Rybicki, CSC, and Father Gene LaurianWegner, O.F.M. on Saturday, July 14th, at 10am at St. Hedwig Church, 331 S. Scott Street in South Bend, Visitation will be today, Friday, July 13th, at the Kaniewski Funeral home, at 3454 North Bendix Drive, from 1-4 pm and 6-8 pm with a rosary service at 4pm, and Saturday visitation at St. Hedwig from 9am-10 am, before the Saturday10am funeral service.
