GRANGER - James P. Panowicz, 84, of Granger, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, in Michiana Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on January 18, 1930, in Dunkirk, NY, to the late James and Wanda (Konwinski) Panowicz. On September 5, 1959, he married Mary Ann Feirrell, who preceded him in death on August 12, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a son, John Panowicz in 2000. James is survived by his three daughters, Susan (Robert) Nichols of Osceola, Laura (Ray) Conley of Granger, and Catherine (Bill) Kuminecz of South Bend; a son, Thomas (Maria) Panowicz of Granger; and 11 grandchildren, Madeline and Corey Kuminecz, Emma, Jack, Alex, Cole, Leah, Max and Molly Panowicz, and RJ and Mary Conley. James was a United States Navy veteran and graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts. Mr. Panowicz worked as a Technical Illustrator for Bendix / Honeywell for over 20 years. He was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Cross Church and served as an usher and member of the Parish Council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council, a volunteer for the Adult Education Department of the South Bend Community School Corporation and a coach at Chet Waggoner Little League. He was an avid reader and water color artist. He loved Notre Dame sports, and was a great golfer, playing until he was 83 in the Erskine Men's Golf Group. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday, December 12, 2014, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 pm Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Holy Cross Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery with military honors performed by the American Legion Post #284. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Church or Michiana Down Syndrome.
